  • Call me Tiger

On a casual Saturday morning, I met up with some friends at a driving range. I usually don't do golf. It's too hard to hit that damn little white ball, and when I do make contact, it doesn't go very far. But I got invited, so I figure what the hell, let's just try it again for fun.

I would say this is more like my 2nd try since the first time, I went to a driving range that had no lefty clubs. Can you imagine trying a sport but having to use your off-hand? No wonder I didn't like golf. But this time, they found a 7-iron I could use. Okay, it started out awful, and it reminded me why I hate this game (because I suck at it). But after about 20 balls, I started to strike it with consistency. Next thing I realized, I was actualy hitting the ball straight, and to about 100 yards. After a while, I tried hitting it harder, and it got near 150 yards. Then I couldn't stop hitting the ball. All I wanted to do is keep hitting (funny how quickly I became interested)...  And the gratification of looking at your ball fly so high and so far...  now I know why those pro golfers do their pose...  it's not just to look and see where the ball is going!

Okay, I must admit my form probably isn't 100% correct, maybe I am not Tiger, and probably not ready to tackle the PGA just yet. But could golf be a new hobby? Just maybe..

  • Spoiled by HD, Julie & Julia, JW Marriott

I was watching The Mask of Zorro last night on HBO. It's one of those movies that has good rewatchability. The storyline is good, acting is half-way decent, there are a few really funny scenes, and of course there is Catherine Zeta-Jones. So while watching the movie, I kept thinking to myself that this movie feels so dated, like it was made in the 40s or something. The music sounded like it came from vinyl records (we had digital stereo sound in the 90s, right?) and the picture quality is pretty average. This movie was made just 10 years ago.

I attribute this to one thing. HD. It makes everything look so GOOD, and any movie made 10 years ago looks like it was made 60 years ago. One of my favorite writers/podcasters Bill Simmons said in one of his recent podcasts that imagine bringing plasma TVs back to the 60s. I mean, people would freak out.

Anyways, I watched Julie & Julia recent on a flight. I heard mixed reviews about the movie, but thought I should check it out since A) It's about cooking and B) Amy Adams is actually pretty cute. I mean, she was a bit annoying in Enchanted, but that was more the character thn her as a person. And is there a more credible actress than Meryl Streep? I can't say the movie was one of the best I've seen, but her performance was really good. Would definitely recommend this movie for a nice casual Sunday afternoon.

Last thing, there has not been a JW Marriott I've stayed at that's disappointed me. It's still my favorite hotel to stay at.

    Til next time...

  • If only I can play poker like this in real life

So after a long and busy day, I decided to unwind tonight by turning to channel 850 on directv, which plays non-stop jazz music, pouring a generous glass of Yamazaki 12 year single malt, and playing pokerstars. I've stopped playing poker on facebook because it just feels like it's rigged.

So I started with about 2,000 chips, around 8pm. I have to admit, some of the people on this table were idiots. Going all in with nothing to play with, basically just hoping and praying to hit something on the flop. So after about two hours of work, I've basically cleaned out the table. No joke. The last hand that did it was just between me and this other player. I picked up pocket Qs. We both checked pre-flop, and the flop was Q75. Both of us checked on the flop, and on the turn, he bets 300. I raised him all-in, and he called. He slow played 57, and thought his two pair was good. Little did he know I flopped a set and had him beat. 4th street and the river was no help for him, and I took him out.

So at 10:20pm, I had 17,629 chips, and the two players remaining had been sitting out. The rest of the table was empty, and pokerstars decided it is time to start a new table. Not a bad night of poker... if I only I can play like this in real life... maybe I can quit my day job and become a professional poker player...    Good night folks...

  • Boys weekend out

Labor day weekend 2009, the boys from the Bay Area decided it was time to have a get together. Harrison, Howard, Sam, Tim, and myself met up in Sin City for a weekend of awesome food, gambling, drinking, etc. It was about 5 years ago since we were playing basketball and hanging out in the Bay Area together. Tim left and went back to the Philippines, Sam moved to North Carolina, and I started traveling. Harrison and Howard went off and got married, had kids. So our lives completely changed. But it was just like old times when we got together... and it was a helluva weekend! Highlights:

    • Wynn Buffet - Amazing food, too much for one sitting. The crab legs are spliced in half and easy to eat. Prime rib was excellent, and I loved the lobster cannelloni.
    • Poker room at the Mirage - Had much success playing 3-6 limit. It was slow and drawn out, but when I was patience, I was up as much as $300 at one point.
    • Dinner at Mon Ami Gabi (Paris Hotel) - Great french cuisine and a view of the fountain show at the Bellagio. One of my favorite spots now. Although we didn't get an outside table, we were able to catch some of the view. Great ambiance, amazing prime rib (Howard's rib eye looked great too), and tremendous list of wine.
    • Poker room at Bally's - After dinner at Mon Ami Gabi, I played more poker at Bally's while decided what to do. On 3 hours of sleep, I won $125 after losing $100 at the Mirage earlier during the day. I am not even sure how I got through the 3 hours at the table, especially since I was going on three hours of sleep.
    • Almost getting into Tao (Venetian) - Amazing how trendy Vegas has become. We tried to get into Tao, but it was way too packed. Saw Shawn Marion there. People seriously dress to impress.

Great weekend, great to see the guys again, and we'll have to meet up again next year!

  • Shopping, bowling, cheap beer, and seafood

It was an unusual weekend, but that doesn't mean it was a bad weekend. Saturday started with lunch with my dad and his mahjong buddies, which equates to drinking at noon...  (yikes!) After stuffing our faces, I decided to take my mom shopping, especially we both felt the need to walk off all that food we just ate. So we spent an afternoon at Ontario Mills, didn't really buy much, but it was good to spend some time with mom.

I was just about to go to bed at 9:30pm, when Winston called me and asked if I wanted to go bowling. I figured going to bed at 9:30pm both Friday and Saturday night would cross the line as pathetic. So off I went... I know what bowling with Winston and Harry involves. Drinking and lots of it. We went to Bowling Square in Arcadia. It started with Harry and I doing Jager shots. Then it a pitcher of Bud Light. Then two more Jager shots. Then TWO MORE pitchers of Bud Light. After 90 minutes of bowling and getting pretty buzzed, we got hungry and wondered from Arcadia to Alhambra to eat fobby food at Garden Cafe. At 2:30am, we were back at Wiston's place and headed home.

Waking up Sunday was a bit hard, but I had to pack and get ready to head to the airport. I took my parents to Redondo Beach for seafood. Lobster, sashimi, Korean spicy fish soup, it was all very very good. Then I went to the airport.

    Pretty good weekend I think...
